Overview
CuraJOY is a wellness hub that provides effective and continuous wellness support for diverse groups of people. It combines behavioral therapy, healthcare, and AI to foster growth and genuine relationships because wellness is interconnected.
From Concept to Completion
As a volunteer product designer at curaJOY, my task was to lead a team of designers to create wellness activities in the app that would feel like a game, promote mental well-being, and foster a sense of accomplishment.
Research & Planning
Review the state of the current unfinished designs. Identify existing trends through market research and user preferences.
Design & Prototyping
Collaborated to create intuitive user interfaces and interactive prototypes. Iteratively refined designs based on user feedback to enhance usability and visual appeal.
Testing & Optimization
Conducted rigorous testing to ensure good performance. Gathered stakeholder and user feedback and iteratively optimized based on usability metrics and user satisfaction.
Collaborate with the developers, other designers groups, and other team members to seamlessly transition into hand off.
Research & Planning
We started out reviewing the partial designs left over by old volunteers. We used Nielsen's heuristics and expert design opinions to review the pages and make adjustments accordingly.
We drew upon what limited research had already been done however this was limited so we used a lot of secondary research from industry reports, competitor analysis, and academic reviews to supplement.
Design & Prototyping
We worked on three main types of activity a quiz, a journal, and a tracker that would allow you to see progress on goals that couldn't be recorded in the app.
Old designs
Quiz
A quick survey with multiple choice questions to help the user find more insight about themselves
Journal
Users write out their answers to the provided journal prompt
Tracker
This is for physical wellness activities we want to assign to a user. Such as "Drink a glass of water".
We worked in tandem to both get the old designs to a place where they could be tested so that we could incorporate more user feedback and worked on how to remake the designs to create new levels of engagement and interaction.
The main takeaways from the initial round of testing were that navigation was confusing, users found the interface to be busy and not minimal, and users questioned their privacy in the app
Our team was focused on addressing these issues while adding a new layer of gamification to curaJOY’s activities.
New designs
Quiz
More dynamic choice-picking options with fun results to share with your wellness team.
Journal
You can have a group journal and answer the journal prompt together. Or you can have a private journal by selecting the AI coach who will give you insight into your answer
Tracker
Every time you complete a task you get an animation of a tree growing a present fruit and you get a new item for your avatar when you reach your goal.
Results
• Iterative user testing allowed us to identify pain points early on, ensuring the final product met user needs.
• Our new designs found a 4.7% increase in user satisfaction.
• Users said positive things like “The activities were very personal,” and they “felt like experts and integrity were involved.”
• Collaborating closely with developers resulted in a smooth implementation and handoff
